Roadway Ownership
There are more than 3,300 miles of roads in the
county. PennDOT owns about one-quarter of these,
including interstates, expressways, and numbered
highway routes (like PA 100 and PA 73). The
Pennsylvania Turnpike owns and maintains 40 miles
of expressway including the Mainline east-west
turnpike and the Northeast Extension. The county,
one of three counties in Pennsylvania to own
roads, owns 74 miles (or 2%) of roadway. Most
are local roads, owned and maintained by
municipalities.
Bridge Ownership
Bridges may be owned by any of these entities or
by private companies, almost always a railroad.
